Marauders

The Marauders is the group that founded by Remus Lupin, James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettingrew. They actively fought against Lord Voldemort and his army.

Pottermore

Marauders are one of the most important and famous groups of Harry Potter Series. Especially during the First Wizarding Wars, they changed the war by joining Order of the Phoenix and lead the group. Marauders are the group of four Gryffindor students of 1971 – 1978.

Between years 1971 and 1978, students of Hogwarts, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black and James Potter formed the group “Marauders” together. They are famous with creating Marauder’s Map and breaking many school rules.

Marauders

Marauders and Hogwarts Years

Friendship of Remus, Peter, Sirius and James started at the beginning of their first years. They shared same ideas and thoughts and created a strong connection together. They did many great things during their Hogwarts years and after.

The group didn’t mention themselves as “Marauders” during their school years and they never intended to form a group. But they became more connected after they discovered Remus Lupin was a werewolf.

Every single Marauder did their bests for Remus Lupin’s safety during his transforms. That mutual purpose caused a strong connection between themselves and resulted with a lifelong friendship bond, and also a group called the Marauders.

They were also known with their mischief during their Hogwarts years. But even with those acts, they were great students, individually, and appreciated by professors.

Marauders were from Gryffindor house. They were also known with bullying Slytherin, Severus Snape. Those acts were one of the reasons of Severus Snape’s hatred against Harry Potter during his professorship at Hogwarts Wizarding School.

Marauder’s Map

Marauders are famous with the magical object called Marauder’s Map. They created this magical object in their fifth year at Hogwarts. It shows the exact location and what they are doing at the moment, everyone at the Hogwarts, including ghosts.

The Marauder’s Map was created to provide a safe transformation to Remus Lupin. The map belonged many students and teachers at the Hogwarts, eventually it came to Harry Potter. Marauder’s Map is the only magical artefact from Harry Potter’s father to him.

First Wizarding Wars

All of the Marauders fought in the First Wizarding War. They joined the Order of Phoenix and fought actively against Lord Voldemort. They affected the war greatly. They especially helped to protection of Harry Potter after the prophecy.

James Potter died during the First Wizarding War. Peter Pettingrew changed the sides with telling the location of Harry Potter to Lord Voldemort. He joined the army of Voldemort.

Meanwhile, Sirius Black imprisoned at Azkaban without a trial because of false accusations. The last member of the group, Remus Lupin, joined the Hogwarts as a professor when the war is over, after a short break.

Second Wizarding Wars

After the Lord Voldemort’s return and gaining power, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin joined the Order of Phoenix again.

They both acted heroic to save Harry Potter and fought against Lord Voldemort until their last breath.

Sirius Black killed by Bellatrix Lestrange, while he was defending Harry Potter in Battle of Department of Mysteries. And the last living member of Remus Lupin killed in the Battle of Hogwarts, while defending Hogwarts Castle.

Special Notes

  • In Harry Potter books, Marauders never mentioned themselves as “Marauders”. The first mention made by Hermione Granger, after they found Marauder’s Map. After J.K Rowling had confirmed the group’s name on Pottermore, they started to referred as “The Marauders”.
